Genre: Spoken Word/Electronic/Beats/Trip Hop. Black vinyl. For fans of Little Simz, Massive Attack, Kate Tempest. Lyrical polymath and spoken-word extraordinaire Emmeline blends genres and influences on this DVD-inspired mixtape, released by Lewis Recordings. Citing both the 'dark stream of consciousness' and 'early influence of film, music, and literature' on her creativity, West-Yorkshire born Emmeline takes us through a musical and visual journey, of navigating her early 20s and a new move to London. Made in collaboration with a range of exciting new production talent, such as Dom Valentino (Skepta, Greentea Peng), John Foyle (FKA Twigs, Sampha), Cameo Blush and The Still Brothers, 'Shapes, Shadows, DVDs' is a collage of sound and experience, landing in the truly unique and trailblazing world of trip-hop and spoken-word infused hip-hop. Speaking on the project, Emmeline says 'A lot of my earliest instances of day-dreaming and wish-making were therefore inspired by movies. These days, a lot of my music is also influenced by film, and by the rich internal landscape that being exposed to art at a young age fostered in me. This mixtape takes an episodic look at my life through various scenes and vignettes, drawing inspiration from both the light and the dark in my mind, and the shapes, shadows, and DVDs that simultaneously haunt and entertain it.' Tracks include the cheeky and poignant 'If My Life Was a Movie by A24', 'Wild Horses, Running Free', and 'Can't Catch Me Now!', as supported by the likes Lauren Laverne, Huw Stephens, Cerys Matthews, Nemone and Emily Pilbeam on BBC 6 Music and Jess Iszatt on BBC Radio 1.
