Gaston Morrel (John Carradine) is a 19th-century puppeteer and artist in Paris. But he is also "Bluebeard," a serial murderer who kills his models once he has painted their portraits. Morrel falls in love with a beautiful costume designer (Jean Parker) and attempts to control his homicidal urges, but a dedicated police inspector (Nils Asther) is determined to catch him.
